Our History
WAALI was launched in February 2018 to help overcome Aboriginal disadvantage by building leadership and governance capabilities amongst Aboriginal people, and inspiring participants to affect meaningful change within their families and communities. See our continuing journey timeline below.
2018
Our inaugural year: the official launch of the Western Australian Aboriginal Leadership Institute. WAALI appointed Ms Anjie Brook as Chief Executive Officer.
- Our inaugural year: the official launch of the Western Australian Aboriginal Leadership Institute
- Our inaugural Chief Executive Officer, Ms Anjie Brook commenced with WAALI.
- The first two cohorts of inspirational Aboriginal women complete the Yorga Djenna Bidi Aboriginal Women’s Leadership Program.
- At the end of 2018 WAALI celebrates our more than 70 Kwopertok Yorgas Alumni members.
2019
Launch of the ATCO Emerging Aboriginal Leaders Program
- Launch of the ATCO Emerging Aboriginal Leaders Program
- Maam On-Country Cultural Regeneration: An ‘on-Country leadership program for Noongar men and youth, which is coordinated and facilitated by Noongar men.
- The First Elders Knowledge Exchange: Women engaged in cultural, health and wellbeing activities and spent time connecting, mentoring and guiding and providing cultural safety to the Yorga Djenna Bidi Participants
2021
Yued Noongar woman Jodie Wyatt commenced with WAALI as the General Manager
- Yued Noongar woman Jodie Wyatt commenced with WAALI as the General Manager
- Launch of the Prison Project: This 10 week program aims to reduce recidivism rates while improving the effectiveness of prison rehabilitation programs through cultural identity, self-development, financial literacy, and connection to culture and community.
